Winamp is a fast, flexible, high-fidelity music player for Windows. Though its hayday has ended, this very popular mp3, audio and Internet radio player still has a very strong following despite the demise of its former owner, Nullsoft.

Winamp

Winamp may seem to have to gone by the wayside in terms of technical advancement as a media player but this is not the case at all. Although it’s 21 years old it still commands a well-regarded fanbase and a big reason for this is the huge range of free and paid for plug-ins that are available. Here you can keep track of the latest plug-in releases for the majority of my plug-ins or just have a look back for older versions of the plug-ins (normally if you have an issue with a current version).

This Winamp download is actually the original version of the program before it ceased development. Though there still is a community on the official web site, the new owners of the program have apparently not continued with its development which leaves us with the last stable version 5.666.

With that said, Winamp really does kick the llama's ass. The layout of the media player is a classic style that supports complete customization with skins that are still available for download from sites across the web.

With skins in mind, you can also run a few of the included spectral visualizations that the program has. Although the main winamp.com web site does not contain the library of free visualizations that were available in years past, there are a number of sites where you can download these files which can be placed in the corresponding folder.

It's a media player that supports MP3, CD, Audiosoft, Audio Explosion, MOD, WAV and other audio formats, custom appearances called skins, plus audio visualization and audio effect plug-ins. additional features including free-form skins, a new decoder, built-in cross fade, and an advanced Media Library.

It's also fully compatible with almost all modern versions of Windows including Windows XP and Vista. Not to mention Windows 10.

The culmination of the features that were added in various iterations of the program finally ended with version 5. With that said, it's still completely stable and provides full support for most common audio and video formats, especially Internet radio stations streaming ShoutCast streams.

Winamp Skin Zip Files (WSZ)

The last step you need to do before unleashing your Skin on the world is to convert it to the WSZ format. How do I do that, you ask? Just follow the following steps:

  1. With your trusty zip compression tool of your choice, zip YOUR skin's folder (not the Winamp 'Skins' folder) into a .zip file.
  2. Rename the new file's extension from .zip to .wsz.
  3. Test it by removing your skin folder, then placing your .WSZ into the Winamp 'Skins' folder.
  4. Run Winamp, then press Alt-S to access the Skin browser. If you see your skin, then everything worked correctly.
  5. That's it! Pat yourself on the back, then take the next step and submit it to Winamp.com.

WSZ History

A Winamp skin is composed of 45 files. Most of the files that create a skin are .BMPs (a very common image file type) and a few text files. When skin support was originally implemented, an artist would have to create those skins and place them into a subdirectory of the Winamp Skins folder (usually located in C:Program FilesWinampSkins).

This started getting messy, because not all of the skin developers were creating subfolders when compressing their skins into a ZIP file for distribution. When an end-user uncompressed the files to the Winamp Skins folder, it would at times overwrite other skins. As a solution, we implemented the functionality into Winamp to read the .ZIP files directly. Then, an end-user would simply place the .ZIP file into their Winamp Skins folder; when using the Skin Browser in Winamp (ALT+S), the skin magically appeared and loaded, if selected.

Zip

This did clean up the mess. However, a new problem then surfaced: The .ZIP file format is a very widely used compression scheme and Winamp was just one of the many dozens of programs available to utilize it. We wanted users to be able to double-click the Skin ZIP file and have Winamp automatically install and load the skin. How do we do that without associating Winamp as the default program for handling skins? Answer: Rename the file extension.

Download laplink others driver. We simply took all those compressed skins ending with the .ZIP extension and renamed them to end with .WSZ (Winamp Skin Zip). This allowed us to stay with the standard Winamp .ZIP files and not have to convert the thousands of skins available for download on the Internet. Any skins that are submitted to our site with filenames ending with .ZIP are automatically renamed to end with a .WSZ before published.

Winamp Zip

Why do all this, you ask? The answer is simple. We wanted to make it so that Winamp would automatically load the skin when a user clicked on a link to download a skin from Internet Explorer, as well as Netscape Navigator. We also wanted to make it so that if a user actually had downloaded the .WSZ file, all they would have to do is double-click it to install it.

What happens then? Well, when a person installs a .WSZ file, Winamp just copies the file to the Winamp Skins folder so that it can be handled correctly. You can also manually move the .WSZ file into your skin directory and Winamp will recognize it just as well.
